A Simple Prayer. . .

The following post is a very long one. I promise it will be worthwhile if you have the time to read through it. There are some pretty amazing stories to follow to testify of the power of prayer.

Although I'm no longer an instructor in Relief Society, I still get to teach once every 3 months on the first Sunday to do a RS Presidency lesson. It was my month this month. We have decided as a presidency to focus on "the basics" this year. My lesson was on 'Prayer'. I feel this message in general can benefit others reading my blog and wanted to share my "findings" on the topic.

I opened my lesson by showing this video:

The line that stands out most to me from this short video is:

"If the power of faith is not embedded into our hearts, the power to endure will crumble." -Elder Henry B. Eyring

Our RS Presidency message for this month is as follows:

We believe that the first principle is first “Faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ”. The easiest way to begin building our faith is through prayer.

“Personal prayer can build our faith to do what God commands. We are commanded to pray always that we will not be overcome. Some of the protection we need will be direct intervention of God. But more of it will come from building our faith to obey. We can pray every day to know what God would have us do. We can commit to start to do it quickly when the answer comes. My experience is that He always answers such petitions. Then, we can choose to obey. As we do, we will build faith enough that we will not be overcome. And we will gain the faith to go back again and again for further instruction. When the storms come, we will be ready to go and do what the Lord commands.”
- Elder Henry B. Eyring Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Many of those I have interacted with recently are all feeling the same way I have been feeling. . . "Overwhelmed, Unmotivated and Stressed Out". I believe that many things happen and come up in waves. I too have felt this way in the past (just as anyone has through out their life) and asked Jeremy for a blessing of guidance and comfort. In my blessing it said that I can ask for relief from these large "stresses" in my life by a "SIMPLE" prayer. I have felt that sometimes comfort or guidance can only be achieved through an overwhelming procedure when instead we can personally receive that "PERSONAL" revelation with a simple prayer.

From a previous conference talk:
One human resource officer assigned to handle petty grievances concluded an unusually hectic day by placing facetiously a little sign on his desk for those with unsolved problems. It read, “Have you tried prayer?” What he may not have realized was that this simple counsel would solve more problems, alleviate more suffering, prevent more transgression, and bring about greater peace and contentment in the human soul than could be obtained in any other way.

That statement alone is enough to see how this can be a “faith builder”… Something so small and easy for ANYONE to do can solve more problems, alleviate more suffering, prevent more transgression, and bring about greater peace and contentment in the human soul than could be obtained in any other way.

****
“Satan trembles, when he sees the weakest Saint upon his knees.” 6 Those who feel that prayer might denote a physical or intellectual weakness should remember that a man never stands taller than when he is upon his knees.
****

Another perspective to prayer:
…Prepare yourself and be ready to have that further light and knowledge to be the answer to someone else's prayer when they are in need.

Elder Russel M. Nelson, Quoram of the Twelve Apostles gives us a personal account from his own experience:

Many of us have had experiences with the sweet power of prayer. One of mine was shared with a stake patriarch from southern Utah. I first met him in my medical office more than 40 years ago, during the early pioneering days of surgery of the heart. This saintly soul suffered much because of a failing heart. He pleaded for help, thinking that his condition resulted from a damaged but repairable valve in his heart.

Extensive evaluation revealed that he had two faulty valves. While one could be helped surgically, the other could not. Thus, an operation was not advised. He received this news with deep disappointment.
Subsequent visits ended with the same advice. Finally, in desperation, he spoke to me with considerable emotion: “Dr. Nelson, I have prayed for help and have been directed to you. The Lord will not reveal to me how to repair that second valve, but He can reveal it to you. Your mind is so prepared. If you will operate upon me, the Lord will make it known to you what to do. Please perform the operation that I need, and pray for the help that you need.” 21

His great faith had a profound effect upon me. How could I turn him away again? Following a fervent prayer together, I agreed to try. In preparing for that fateful day, I prayed over and over again, but still did not know what to do for his leaking tricuspid valve. Even as the operation commenced, 22 my assistant asked, “What are you going to do for that?”

I said, “I do not know.”

We began the operation. After relieving the obstruction of the first valve, 23 we exposed the second valve. We found it to be intact but so badly dilated that it could no longer function as it should. While examining this valve, a message was distinctly impressed upon my mind: Reduce the circumference of the ring. I announced that message to my assistant. “The valve tissue will be sufficient if we can effectively reduce the ring toward its normal size.”

But how? We could not apply a belt as one would use to tighten the waist of oversized trousers. We could not squeeze with a strap as one would cinch a saddle on a horse. Then a picture came vividly to my mind, showing how stitches could be placed—to make a pleat here and a tuck there—to accomplish the desired objective. I still remember that mental image—complete with dotted lines where sutures should be placed. The repair was completed as diagrammed in my mind. We tested the valve and found the leak to be reduced remarkably. My assistant said, “It’s a miracle.”

I responded, “It’s an answer to prayer.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Think of things YOU are seeking the Lord’s help in. List what YOU can do to gain the answer.  Exercise faith in the Lord as YOU pray for help and seek to do YOUR part to find a solution.
*Realize that this requires you to “DO” something…

“Declaring our testimony of the gospel is good, but being a living example of the restored gospel is better. Wishing to be more faithful to our covenants is good; actually being faithful to sacred covenants—including living a virtuous life, paying our tithes and offerings, keeping the Word of Wisdom, and serving those in need—is much better. Announcing that we will dedicate more time for family prayer, scripture study, and wholesome family activities is good; but actually doing all these things steadily will bring heavenly blessings to our lives.” –Elder Uchtdorf

I would like to share this story I read this week that touched me in regards to prayer. It was sent to me by Sis. Travers, written in the LDS Meridian Magazine. Get your tissue out. I can't make it through this story with out shedding a couple of tears.

Teach Me To Pray – A Prisoner’s Plea
By Rynna Ollivier

Lately I have been reminiscing. Looking back over my life I feel extremely grateful for all of the marvelous experiences and blessings I have received. In doing so, I have come to a significant realization. Many of my life’s finest moments have come when I was on the Lord’s errand and didn’t know it. My visit to a French Tahitian prison on the island of Tahiti was one such moment.

I remember waiting outside the entrance to the prison – with about fifty other people – hoping and praying that my husband would make it back in time so I wouldn’t have to go in alone.

When we first arrived at the compound we found out that visitors were allowed to bring food and magazines in to the prisoners. So my husband decided to make a quick market run, thinking he had plenty of time before visitation.

But when I saw the guards coming towards the entrance – and still no sign of him – I knew that I had to decide, very quickly, whether or not I was going to go in without him.

A very intimidating officer gave instructions regarding a security check and then unlocked the gates. The other three held back, inspecting the crowd intently for anything suspicious looking. Everyone, but me, rushed in.

As I stood there hesitating – hoping that at any minute my husband would come driving up – I was told, very harshly, that it was now or never, come in or stay out, but he was going to lock up in five seconds and no one could come in after that. So I looked around one last time, took a deep breath and stepped inside.

Once I entered the compound I saw how awful it was. The place was filthy and rundown, and if you were lucky enough to have an outside cell you had a small barred window facing the prison yard.

I was grateful that I couldn’t hear what was being yelled at me through some of the prisoner’s windows, as I walked quickly across the grounds to the designated visitor’s area.

As I entered the building I handed the guard at the desk the name of the prisoner I had come to see, and took a seat with everyone else.

Unprepared
As I looked at the other visitors with their bags of food and magazines, I felt sad that I was the only one that didn’t have something for my prisoner.

There I sat, alone – with nothing to give him, wondering what I could possibly say or do to bring hope and comfort to someone in such a dire situation and that I had never met before!

Heart Wrenching Circumstances
We were there to see a young man whose worst nightmare began about two years earlier, when he made friends with two American surfers while vacationing in Tahiti. Unknown to him was that these guys were involved in drug trafficking.

One day while they were having lunch at a local café, the Police swooped in and arrested all three of them on drug smuggling charges.

The International Drug Authorities had been tipped off that some young American guys had been smuggling drugs all over the world, laminated in their surfboards. The Authorities got wind of them in South America, lost them for a while, and now were finally able to track them down and arrest them in Tahiti.

The incarceration of the innocent young man was unfortunately “guilt by association” – in a country with zero drug tolerance. (This is important info for any young people who might be reading this.)

The fact that my husband’s cousin was legally representing this boy, and asked us to check on him while on our vacation in Tahiti, is how I ended up in a prison on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Prayer Is the Soul’s Sincere Desire
After about twenty minutes in the visitor’s area, a guard escorted me to a small, musty cement room where I was told to wait. It wasn’t long before a very thin, distressed and dirty prisoner was brought in. I don’t think “shocked” is a strong enough word to describe his reaction when he saw me. I was nicely dressed – having just come from Church – a total stranger and not much older than he was.

I fought back tears as I choked out “Hello. My name is Rynna. I’m here on behalf of your father and your attorney.” With those words came an instant meltdown. He dropped to his knees, bowed his head, and wept.

As I watched his shoulders heave with emotion, tears filled my eyes as I inwardly pleaded with Heavenly Father to guide me as to what I should do and say. The next thing I knew I had moved closer to him, placed my hand on his shoulder and reached down to help him to his feet. He responded half-heartedly and took my hand.

We sat for quite a while in the two chairs that had been placed in the small area, saying nothing, before he finally broke the silence.

“Miss, do you believe there’s a God?” I replied with all the fervor of my heart “I know there is!” “Do you believe He hears and answers people’s prayers?” was his next question. “Yes – yes I do,” I said. “Then would you teach me to pray?” he humbly asked.

With all that I was anticipating he would ask me – and no answers to give him – I must admit I never imagined that he would ask me about God and prayer.

It was at that moment that I felt a shock run through my entire body as I remembered that I was carrying, in my purse, the new issue of the Ensign, which was totally devoted to prayer.
I was filled with emotion as I recalled the promptings of the spirit urging me to take it with me as I packed for the trip. But it wasn’t until we were walking out the door to the airport that I realized (again reminded by the spirit) that I had forgotten it. So I ran back, got it and stuffed it down in my purse, where it had remained until that very moment.

No Earthly Goods Have I
I had not come bearing peanut butter, beef jerky, candy or soft drinks – all the foods to satisfy his mortal cravings. But what I had unknowingly brought this starving young man was something he wanted much more than earthly food. He longed for spiritual food for his spiritual cravings, and God had sent me with a feast!

The next words out of my mouth were not my own, and imprinted deep into my soul. I took both of his trembling hands in mine, looked into his dispirited eyes and said … “God is your Heavenly Father. He loves you, knows that you’re here, and knows the desires of your heart. He is concerned and saddened over your situation and has sent me to give you this special magazine.

As I pulled this heaven sent gift from the bottom of my purse and handed it to this despondent and forlorn child of God, I felt angels encircle us.

But it was the look on his face of pure joy and astonishment when he saw the cover – a young man kneeling at the side of his bed, praying – that will live forever in my heart and mind.

The Spirit of God descended upon that little cement room, in that vile and unholy prison, like dew from heaven, as I watched the miracle of his countenance change from one of darkness and despair to one of hope and light.

In God’s Care
This young man remained in prison for another three years before he was finally released. But he was released! The other two young men were sentenced to life.

Following my visit, attorney/client privilege was honored and our cousin never discussed any of the happenings or particulars of the case after that. But I knew in my heart that this young man would be okay because he was in God’s tender care.

However, I did find out that after his acquittal he returned to the States, got a job and enrolled in school. And … not only did he know there was a God, but he knew that God loved him, and that He did indeed answer prayers.

This experience impacted my life beyond measure. It strengthened my testimony of unspoken, heartfelt prayer and taught me, very personally, of Heavenly Father’s loving care, concern and mercy for His children; that even in our darkest moments we can know the goodness of God. “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye search for me with all of your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

Looking Back
A couple of weeks ago I heard Bette Midler sing one of her older – released in the 90’s – but very popular songs, “From a Distance”. Some of you may remember it.

As I listened to her sing the haunting chorus, “God is watching us / God is watching us / God is watching us from a distance,” it really hit me as to what a profoundly misguided and false message this song was sending to an already spiritually confused world!

God isn’t watching us from a distance! He is right here with us, always ready to help and bless us, if we but seek His help. “But behold, verily, verily, I say unto you that mine eyes are upon you. I am in your midst and ye cannot see me; But the day soon cometh that you shall see me and know that I am . . .” (D&C 38:7).

A sure witness to this truth is the remarkable experience I had in the Tahitian jail. How finely tuned every aspect of that happening was.

Choosing to go on vacation where this innocent young man was imprisoned, our cousin being his legal counsel and asking us to check on him while there, his heartfelt longing to learn to pray, my being prompted to bring the Ensign – which just happened to be totally dedicated to prayer that very month – and it remaining stuffed in my purse for days until the moment it was needed and called forth by the Lord.

This is not the work of chance or of an impersonal, distant God! This heavenly assignment
was orchestrated by a loving, Omnipotent, Omnipresent God – Lord of all creation – who knows our every need, our every thought, and whose work and glory is to bring to pass our immortality and eternal life – one on one. And it is this knowledge of God’s love and purpose that is the glorious message of the Gospel! (See Moses 1:39)

I bless the day that I had the opportunity to be on the Lord’s errand; to minister to one of His children who was desperately in need, who looked heavenward for relief – and received it.

The memory of that Sunday has carried me through years of difficulties – reassuring me at every turn that “God does notice us. And He watches over us. But it is usually through another person that He meets our needs.” (President Spencer W. Kimball)
And as often is the case, the one who is on the Lord’s errand is blessed as much, if not more, then the one who is ministered to. That certainly was the case for me. *

*Endnote - Weary in Waiting
Have any of you reading this article has grown weary in waiting; feels abandoned or forgotten – longs to know if God really is aware of your sufferings? It is especially for you that I wanted to share this experience and assure you that relief is coming. You have not been forgotten.

As to why we sometimes have to wait so long or suffer so much before help or deliverance comes, I offer the following compassionate and loving scriptures as a life raft for any who might be struggling to stay afloat in the wake of adversity.

“My Son, (daughter) peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; (In the scheme of eternity)

And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high … know thou, my son, (daughter) that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good” (D&C 121:7-8; 122:7).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Lord is in all of our lives. He loves us. He wants to bless us. He wants us to seek His help. As He guides us and directs us and as He hears and answers our prayers, we will find the happiness here and know what He desires for us."

In the name of our humble Savior, Jesus Christ,
Amen

Teagan and Love

Teagan: Mom... I'm going to marry Joanne
Me: Oh yeah? How come?
Teagan: I love her. She always gives me candy.
Me: Oh yeah?
Teagan: Mom, when are YOU going to get married again?
Me: Huh?
Teagan: WHEN are you going to get married again?
Me: What do you mean?  What would Daddy do?
Teagan: He would just go to work.
Me: You BET he would... He would have a LOT to pay for. (ha ha)

******

Teagan was in the other room writing a valentine to Joanne. Since he can't actually write, he was just scribbling on a paper while saying what he was "writing" down. He didn't know I was standing in the doorway listening to him.

Dear Joanne,
I love you so much. I want you to be my valentine and want to live with you. I love you because you always give me candy and my mom always says "no".
Love,
Teagan

Harlem Shake Idea

Wouldn't it be funny to do the Book of Mormon Shake? I have no idea what that would consist of to make it non-blasphemous, but if the Peanuts can figure something out, then we should be able to.

If you're not sure what it is yet...

Happy 80th Birthday Honey Pat

Happy Birthday to my Grandma who just turned #80! (FYI - My kids call their grandmas "Honey" because Teagan started doing that after he heard Jeremy's dad always calling his mom "Honey" and it has just stuck.) My family had a big party to celebrate and family flew in from all over to be there. I was sooooo bummed that I missed it and wish we could've been there. My mom and aunt put together a little program for her and asked my boys to sing a song that my grandma used to sing to me when I was little. It's an old LDS church primary song that I've never heard except for from my grandma. It's called Little Brother Vegetable. She used to sing it to me to get me to eat my vegetables. Here are my grandma's words of her memory of this song.

“That was one of my favorite songs learned in primary many years ago. I remember it very clearly because of the way the chorister introduced the song. She had one of the Primary boys all dressed up like a carrot and sitting a in a little tub. There he sat just grinning at us from under his green carrot top hat. I thought it was so funny! I finally recognized the carrot as being Dickie Lambert, a boy that lived just through the block from us. We eagerly learned the song after that introduction. We sang it for years and years. Later when I had children of my own, I used to sing this song to them to help them more readily eat their vegetables. It worked!”

Here are the words to it:
Little brother vegetable sat within a dish,
Cooked and seasoned spicily as you’d ever wish.
Said little brother vegetable just you look at me,
I’m the food of hidden treasure, eat me and you’ll see!

And here are the queue cards we used to hold up as my kids sang it. The art was especially done by muahh. :) I know, I know, it's a-mazing. lol

Now, I thought this was going to be an easy take because we practiced it first and everyone did great! I should've been filming the practice because it didn't go as smoothly after that...

Enjoy! Here is the final video:
*The first 30 seconds just shows what the DVD menu looks like. The boys all have stickers on their heads and they light up when you go to each chapter. :)

Just for laughs

The realistic conversation and yelling that goes along in our car as we are driving Jeremy to work because it costs $8 a day to park. Isn't that lame?

Teagan: You "Peen-chunk, Poo-Chah!"
(Teagan thinks that he won't get in trouble if he makes up words that mean nothing when taunting Tate)
Me: Teagan, stop calling Tate names.
Tate (to Teagan): You're stupid. Stupid baby!
Me: Tate!
Teagan: I'm not calling him names. I said it to the trees.
Tate: I will CUT your trees down Teagan.

-----

A question I hadn't anticipated yet at the age of 4.
Teagan: Mommy how does the baby get in your belly?
(Teagan looking at me VERY intently and quietly waiting for my answer. I felt like his little eyes were burning a hole in my brain.)
Me: Uhhhhhh... Go ask daddy.
Teagan: Walking in to our bedroom to ask daddy... "Daddy- How does the baby get into mommy's belly when there's a baby in there?"
Daddy: (looking up at me with blank stares and laughing a bit) You'll find out when your older.

-----

Me: Tate! Why is there hot dog in my shoe?!!
Jeremy: (laughing) and then says, "When did we have hot dogs?"

Valentine's Love 2013

What a wonderful Valentine's Day this year. I know they don't really celebrate it here in Australia, but WE do and I plan to continue to do that even if we are on the other side of the world.

Jeremy got up early with the boys today and then ran to the store and brought home some beautiful roses. He made heart shaped pancakes for all of us for breakfast and helped me get ready for our Valentine party for pre-school. What a fun way to start our V-day!

Pre-school was really fun today. Eli comes to pre-school on Thursdays with us, so I'm glad he got to be there for the big party (you can see in my previous "school" post).

Sent the following E-card to my hubby (below), gave our kids Angry Bird Juice with a valentine card (didn't get a chance to take a photo before they tore into it)... and then we finished off our night with the most amazing and awesome dinner at the Travers house (my Aussie mum). She went all out and made Butter Chicken (one of our favorites since we've moved here), homemade lasagna, salad, french bread, Brandy Snaps with blueberries for dessert AND Pumpkin Pie (which by the way was the BEST pumpkin pie I have EVER eaten... Hands down... seriously!) AND she even made hot chips (french fries) for the kids. Our kids fell asleep and we stayed for awhile chatting with each other. It was such a fun night! I'm so grateful that we have people here that love us. Australia is for sure our second home now! I need to remember to bring my camera when we go over there so that we have some photos with their family. Be Ready when I come again Joanne! :)

School Days, School Days

So we are a couple of weeks into Teagan and Tate's home-school, pre-school AND the boys are loving it! I love the curriculum and the program that they are doing and it is most gratifying to see that they are really learning and applying the stuff we learn through out the day. The program comes with everything you need to prepare each days lessons. We do it Mon-Fri from 9am-12pm. I love that it provides structure, not to mention something that we all enjoy doing that is productive and something that is teaching them. The program is from the US. I thought it would be good to incorporate US stuff since that is where we will eventually end up. If we talk about length, then I'm sure to incorporate the Aussie measurements as well (example: meters and feet, km and miles).

Here is a photo of our calendar. The program comes with everything you need to make a calendar each month and tells you how to organize your days. It is so organized yet simple! After we talk about the month and day and let one of the boys put up the date on the calendar, we have the boys go and look at the weather and put up the weather symbol of what it's like outside and then we talk about what kind of clothes you wear for that weather.

There are 1-2 crafts that we do each day. I don't know what to do with all of them. I feel less guilty throwing them away if I take photos of them. I love them, but seriously... I just don't want the papers piling up in a file somewhere. Our house is too small to keep stuff like that.

On Valentines Day we had a Valentine party. We started the day off with a fire drill and then the boys got to play "heart" games, make valentines and hand them out and help make a heart cake (thanks to Joanne's heart cake pan)! We have Eli come once every week to pre-school with us and were excited that the day he came this week, we had a party! The boys made heart place mats to eat their cake. You can see Teagan used every single heart we had cut out and put it on his place mat. Tate only took the two biggest hearts and then he was done. It's funny to see how different they are. I let them paint once and Teagan used only one brush for each color and none of the colors mixed by the time he was done. Tate used one brush and all the colors were 'one' at the end.

This month the boys are learning their address, about dinosaurs, emotions and some various numbers and letters. I can't say enough how impressed I am at how much they are learning in such a short time.

Australia Day

I am loving that it's Summer right now and that there are so many things going on OUTSIDE. I keep seeing all of the Facebook posts of how cold it is in the Northern Hemisphere and am glad that we are warm! ...BUT, school has begun, so it's only a matter of time until fall is here.

This post is long overdue because Australia Day is January 26th! We had a lovely Australia Day (which is like our Independence Day). We woke up early and went with our friends the Rossel's to a community fundraising brekkie (breakfast). And they even served Snags (aka. Sausage/hotdogs) at 7:30 in the morning. And you see the photo correct... they don't serve it here with a hot dog bun; it goes straight onto a piece of bread and you fold it up. Check out Tate's breakfast milk. I've never seen Chocolate Malt Ball Honey Milk before.

The brekkie was followed by a Peppa Pig concert which Tate was soooooooo excited for because he loves watching Peppa Pig on t.v. You can see a pic of him below waving at Peppa Pig. So cute!

AND, when was the last time you had a big 'ol Slurpee from 7/11?! I think they all shut down in Utah along with the Blockbusters. But they are all still going strong here. :) So we followed the Rossel's over to 7/11 for the biggest Slurpee you can get.

"Ahhh... Big Gulps, huh?!" -Dumb & Dumber
Those little Cadbury chocky's (chocolate) you see are full of fruit and nuts and jelly bean like candy. They have all sorts of candy bars - or should I say "lollies" like that here. Interesting.

Happy Australia Day!

Congratulations Tate!

Tate has been doing so awesome this first week of potty training. I got him to "announce" his "biggest" (and I do mean BIG) achievement.

Just in case you're wondering, Duece = 2 ...and if you need further explanation than that, I'm not sure what to tell you. lol

When was the last time you ever saw toilet paper with printed pictures on them? I don't think I've seen anything like that since the 80's! Luckily Joanne, my fill-in, Aussie Mom, had some awesome toilet paper with puppies printed on it and she gave a couple of rolls to Tate for his new potty training week. He LOVES dogs and it made him feel really special to have special toilet paper for his first week of being on the potty.

We are so proud of Tate. He is really catching on fast and am even more excited that we don't have to buy diapers for him or Teagan anymore. Woo Hoo! I can't believe that Tate is going to be 3 years old in only 5 months and that Steffan will be going into nursery in 4 months. WHOA!

Some other updates...
We are going to be starting up home-school pre-school for Teagan and Tate on February 4th when everyone else starts the new year of school here. We will just be doing it at our home from 9 to noon, 5 days a week. It looks like we may have one to two more children here during that time as well but they will not be starting in with us right away. It will be good for the boys to interact with other kids during that time and have that structure each day. It will be good for ME to have the planned structure each day too. I'm really excited to start it. I order monthly and have a pre-school kit sent to me with all the curriculum and supplies in it to accommodate up to 3 children. The reason we decided to do this instead of sending the boys to school is because its so expensive. We are going to be applying for permanent residency soon so that we can get it paid for, but that costs about $3,500 to apply - - Therefore, it doesn't make sense to pay for schooling AND residency right now.

Tate is so dang smart. That is also why I'm glad we have decided to do pre-school at home, because I really think he is ready to go to preschool. He is already saying the alphabet and counting to thirteen. And I swear that Teagan can read sometimes because he can recognize enough letters and sounds to figure out words when you ask him to. However, I think he is still unsure of himself and when you ask him to do it he tells you he doesn't know even though I think he really does.

Steffan is just about walking and has tons more teeth. He is now trying to sound out some words and can understand a lot of what you tell him to do. He is definitely the "baby" of the family. I 'baby' him much more than I ever did the other two. I think it's because this is the longest I have gone with out being pregnant since we've been married.

Jeremy is going to the specialist for his stomach issues on Feb 18th. He is losing a lot of weight still and has now grown some really hard ball that sticks out on his stomach. No bueno! Keep your fingers crossed that something is not serious.

ANDDDD... I got a new calling today at church. I had felt this last month that I didn't have much longer being the teacher and got a call from the bishop last night asking if I could meet with him 20 minutes before church started today. They extended the calling 1st Counselor in the Relief Society Presidency and I accepted. I'm so excited to start my new calling and am excited to be put in the position to really get to know a lot more of the sisters in the ward although I am sad to say goodbye to my teaching calling because I really loved doing it. PLUS  - - - I get to shoot my first wedding in a couple of weeks. I'm so excited! Keep posted on my photo blog for updates.

TTFN!

BEST Classic Macaroni Salad

I'm posting this on my blog because I get soooo bugged every time I try to find it on my Pinterest. They need a "search" for your own Pinterest boards. I can never re-find the stuff I pin. Is there a "search" for your own boards? Did I miss that somewhere?

At any rate, I made this as my side dish for Christmas Eve over at the Field home and Jeremy wants me to make it every five seconds right now. It IS pretty good! Probably not good for you, but yummy-yummy!

This Guy Stole My Heart

This is what I do now when Jeremy takes Teagan and Tate to mutual with him. I'm thinking of offering some mini-photo shoots for Valentine's Day, but am not sure if they celebrate it the same way here as in the US. Will have to find out. Didn't these turn out cute though?!

PS. To summarize my day: Tate pooped on the floor once, BUT in the potty twice. We are back on the potty training band wagon and it's exhausting, but looking forward to NO MORE diapers (with 2 of the 3). AND... Steffan took his first steps today and has taken up playing with any type of ball you give him. He will play with it for hours and throws it back and forth and chases after it.

Tate the Shaman (edited version)

My dad put this one together after I posted the last one. It makes me laugh every time I see it.

Steffan's 1st Birthday Clip

When Joey was here visiting he took this little video clip on his phone of Steffan sucking up the attention on his first birthday. He was just LOVING that all eyes were on him and he did a little show-off jig that was making us all laugh. Thanks for sending this to me Joe!

p.s. don't mind my big stack of laundry waiting to be folded (as usual) in the back.

December 2012 - The New Year 2013

After reading this post (if you even make it through to the end), you will see why I have been MIA for the last month. I don't know how we even fit it all in! AND... if you are looking to visit Australia, this is a good post to start thinking about what you want to do while you're here.

My sister has come and gone. It was the quickest month of my life! We are all so sad to see her go home and hope she will make it back out soon (whether for school/work, or just to see us). :) We had a packed month with her here along with the holidays. I was looking over our December calendar and here was Kiley's Australian "DID" list:
  • 1st thing on the list that I'm sure was "unforgettable" (sarcasm) was that we had our 6 month home inspection which I have been told is a government law here for renters. Everything inside and out has to be in tip-top condition and then one of the real estate agents from the property management company comes out and inspects everything. Kiley made it the week before inspection and was extremely helpful in cleaning and doing yard work. Maybe she can come back again when we have our inspection in June. ;)
  • Right away we had her come to our Relief Society Christmas party to meet the wonderful women in our ward whom I love so much!
  • The photos were taken and put together by a member of our RS.
    • Another ward Christmas party which was opened up with a solo performance by muahh singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"...
    • Kiley was most helpful for the 3 or 4 photo shoots I did during her stay! And, she got to see some of the cool parks here when we did them (such as Commonwealth Park).
    • Kiley helped me make lots of cookies for a cookie exchange party we went to (I love my Utah friend, Natalie, who held it). I don't think it is common to have those types of party's here. Especially because it's hot and not fun to cook when you have no a/c.
    • Kiley got to go visiting teaching with me and was able to chat with the wonderful ladies I get the pleasure of seeing regularly and even got a special gift from one of them who is from Papua New Guinea. She makes string bags and sells them at the market each week and made one for both Kiley and I. They are awesome! You can see a picture of Kiley's string bag in the Sydney Opera House pic's below.
    • AND - - - We had movie night just about EVERY night with popcorn. FUN! Some movies on our list...
      1. VAMPIRE DIARIES (a.k.a. "V.D." and not in the gross way) - We waited 3 months to watch the season while we waited for Kiley to come. We used to watch it every week together, so we waited and let the suspense build up. We had seven or eight episodes to watch and are patiently waiting the next one to come out 48 hours from now (but who's counting?)
      2. Modern Family = Hilarious!
      3. Big Bang Theory (I think Teagan is Sheldon!)
      4. Grease
      5. The Breakfast Club
      6. It's A Wonderful Life - 1st time for kiley to see it!
      7. Pitch Perfect - This one came on a little too often at our house over the month. Not to mention that I wasn't sure if Kiley had brought any other music on her phone besides the soundtrack to this movie for the entire month.
      8. Lots of other Christmas movies
      9. And lastly... Kiley was nice enough to stay home one night with the boys while Jeremy and I enjoyed a night out to see The Hobbit. (not sure if I followed the story line, but it was good enough to watch.)
    • Now to some of the more adventurous items - - - Cockington Green Gardens. Always a favorite of mine.
    • The Royal Australian Mint
    • Questacon
    • Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. This is where Kiley took our family photo for our Christmas card that never got mailed out (he he) and where we saw koala's, kangaroos, emu's, and wallaby's out walking around in the wild. It is really cool!
    • NASA Satellite Station. The largest and I believe the only one in the southern hemisphere. It is the satellite that received the first images of the last rover that went into space.
    • Black Mountain/Telstra Tower.
    • Jamberoo Waterpark = Coolest water park EVER!
    • Canberra International Zoo & Aquarium = 1st time Kiley has seen a real shark in person.
    • Bateman's Bay = 1st time HOLDING a jelly fish. (Yes, I held it from the top part and no one got stung)
    • John Knight Memorial Park
    • The Kangaroo Field
    • Mt. Ainslie Lookout
    • Australian War Memorial
    • Capital/ Parliament House
    • The Aboriginal Embassy (he he)
    • Canberra Center for Christmas in the City & New Year's - They had all sorts of fun stuff going on that was free for the kids: camel rides, trampoline's, bumper cars, you name it. We went to see the camels, and waited an hour in line after they told us we would FOR SURE make it on before they took a break, and when it was our turn to get on the camel they said, "Sorry, the camels have to go see someone right now." What the? Grrrrrr!!!
    • Teagan's Angry Bird Birthday Party: Listen to his wish and comment at the end. Then I added a video from Jeremy's phone that I found that Teagan made. lol He was video taping the cake that Jared and Hisa brought him.
    • Holidays, Holiday, Holidays
      • Cookies Galore = We baked and delivered over 300 cookies!!!
      • Buying/Wrapping presents because Tate couldn't leave anything alone for 3 seconds with out unwrapping it, meaning it all had to be done the night before.
      • Santa Came to our house! (see pics below - check back for video after I get Jer to figure out how to download it as a file so I can keep it)
      • Christmas Eve = Dinner at our Utah friend's family, the Field Home. Played Christmas games and ate lots of food, laughed and exhausted our children out for the night.
      • Christmas Day = Had the missionaries over for breakfast, went to a Christmas morning service at the chapel and then after resting and letting the kids play with all their toys we headed over to my adopted Australia mom's house (Joanne) and hung out with her family for Christmas games and dinner. She is the one that made Kiley the "Welcome Aussie" cake. I need to get pic's of her and her family. She is one of the most amazing people I've met!
    • Plenty of Costco Runs...
THEN... if that wasn't enough we used our WorldMark Timeshare for the last few days of  her stay to enjoy Sydney and all of the summer festivities happening there right now. We LOVE our timeshare there. It is only a couple blocks away from Darling Harbour and once we get there we never have to drive. We can walk everywhere we need to go. Kiley and I stayed up really late the night before and made food for the whole week so that we didn't have to buy food for every meal because it's too expensive! You already have to pay $30-$40/day to park. So, making food is the way to go if you have a kitchen when you get there.
    • Day 1:
      • Detour to IFly tree top walk on the way to Sydney
    • Day 2:
      • Maddam Tussauds Wax Museum
      • Water taxi over to P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney (which is actually the Taronga Zoo)
      • Water taxi over to the Sydney Opera House for the walk through tour
      • Watched Finding Nemo back at the hotel room! P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney!
    • Day 3:
      • Darling Harbour Aquarium
      • Sydney Wild Life Park
      • Sydney Tower Eye
        • As we were walking to the Sydney Tower Eye, there was an 'Abbie' on the street playing his didgeridoo. Tate got really into it and almost fell over a couple times. I wish I would've gotten a shot of all the people that were watching him because they were all pointing and laughing at how cute he was.

      • Day 4:
        • Last Day souvenir shopping and off to the airport
I'm so glad that Kiley got to come stay with us. There is no way we could have fit this trip in with any time less than the month she was here. I feel like we had some good sister bonding and got to know each other better. GOOD TIMES KI!

And last, here are some highlight pic's of Kiley's visit (in no particular order):

Canberra International Zoo & Aquarium
This was the best part of the zoo! There is a section you can go in and pet the kangaroos and wallaby's and there are emu's walking around. Well these two creepy emu's kept walking right by us and it started to freak us out a little. One emu wouldn't leave Tate alone and he was screaming and crying and it even pecked at his head (I don't think it actually touched him though)! We were laughing so hard and I was searching for my camera and Tate had this look of abandonment on his face when I didn't help him. I felt bad because he was terrified but I couldn't pass up the moment. He took cover in the stroller as you can see.

Teagan's 4th Birthday Party
Teagan is WAY into Angry Birds. I'm regretting an Angry Birds Family Home Evening I did previously because Teagan is HOOKED! We have had to start limiting the time on the Ipad now so that he isn't a gamer junkie at the age of 4. Naturally he wanted an Angry Birds birthday. I was so dang busy keeping up with the birthday party that I didn't really get any pictures. Everything we have was taken on Jeremy's phone. Luckily we have one little video of the birthday boy blowing out his candles. Listen to what he says he wishes for. It makes me smile. :) ...and yes, I painted the Angry Bird mural in the back ground - Not too shabby for some paints on a box.

I wanted to do something he will never be able to do in Utah for his birthday which is have a water fight outside in December. So, that is what we did. We had games, and face painting, made pizza, pigs in a blanket along with Australian Ferry Bread, popcorn, Cheezels, and the cutest cupcake/cake's in an ice cream cone with an Angry Bird marshmallow. We blew up millions of balloons to put on the ceiling, streamers hanging everywhere and blew up 2 swimming pools and 4 Angry Birds inner tubes (which made us blue in the face by the time we were done). Teagan said it was his most favorite birthday EVER and he had tons of fun!

Sydney Opera House

Bateman's Bay
Look how cool this is. We saw a bunch of blue bottle jelly fish (also known as Portuguese Man-of-War)  and picked them up with the boys sand castle toys. We were SOOOOO lucky that no one got stung by them because they were all over the place.

Maddam Taussad's Wax Museum
Darling Harbor, Sydney
Yes, we are all a little nutso!

IFLY

Black Mountain/ Telstra Tower
Canberra, ACT

Sydney Wildlife Park
Darling Harbor
Koalas and Crocodiles, Oh My!

Here is a little video clip of the crocodile. I personally think the croc is fascinating in person.

And here is a video of a kookaburra. It let us get so close to it, we could've touched it. I was surprised it didn't try and fly away, but it didn't move at all. It's funny... Jeremy keeps telling the bird to sing and Teagan must think that he is asking HIM to do it. So, Teagan is quietly singing in the background. lol
NASA Satellite Station
NSW

John Knight Memorial Park
Canberra, ACT
Spent a nice, relaxing day with a picnic and feeding the ducks at the JKM park.

Australian Parliament Building
Aboriginal Embassy = trailer house and tents pitched out in the front with a white board that said they were closed for the day.

Kangaroo Field

Christmas Day
Daddy & Tate drawing on each other with the new markers they got to color their new castle.
Pic of Santa in our living room and the toys he left!

This is something we tried to do but they were closed for the holidays. I REALLY, REALLY want to go to the Blue Mountains soon (Click the Blue Mountains link). I've seen the Blue Mountains in tons of National Geographic stuff and it is amazing and beautiful.

We also really wanted to go to the Sydney Temple but didn't have time to.

If you made it through this far, I DARE you to fit this many activities in three weeks instead of four! :)
