Australian Golden Orb Weaver Spider

So... my previous post on Australian spiders is TRUE! They are HUGE! When we were at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, these spiders were everywhere. You definitely didn't want your kids traipsing around in the plants or bushes. My mom took these pictures. You can see a little spider next to the big one. The little spider reflects what a normal, large spider would look like in Utah. These spiders had bodies (not including the leg span) as big as Tate's (my 20 month old) palm. It was creeeeeeeeeeepy! We found that these types of spiders that hang up high are less venomous than the spiders found on the ground. This is because the spiders on the ground have to hunt and fight for their prey and these types of spiders just have to wait for something to fly into their web. You can see some of the little bugs that have flown into their web and have been spun up in web for eating. Eww! One of these spiders was hanging over our head as we walked under it and a girl behind us put her umbrella up before proceeding. lol

  1. I must say, I am glad that I'm not there to see these wonderful creatures in the doorways, on the walls and all over. That's one thing I won't miss.
